Loving the Sunshine Coast Life!

Peter & Sharon - Nature's Edge BuderimOne of Nature’s Edge youngest couples, Peter and Sharon Downing, who live…at number 10 ….obviously, bought their home in Natures Edge for the rainforest but say as well as loving the rainforest, it is the people who make it special.

Originally from Adelaide and new to the Sunshine Coast, Peter and Sharon credit the need to change their stressful lives as the catalyst for deciding the time was right for the move. It was not a rapid decision as they had been thinking about it for a couple of years and always intended to relocate. But after many years of shift work at the Adelaide Airport and previously with SA Tourism Commission and 30 years for Sharon at the Library organising events and team leading, it was time for a change.

Peter and Sharon laugh a lot together and enjoy life which is perhaps why they fit in so well in the Sunshine Coast and at their new home and community. They have been visiting South East Queensland since 1980 when they discovered Noosa while holidaying on the Gold Coast. They then spent a lot of time at Noosaville where they spent two weeks each year.

Some of their close friends moved to Buderim and were there for 13 years and that is how we came to be in this part of the coast. Sharon says “I have fond memories of the Forest Glen Deer Sanctuary, who would have thought we would end up moving nearby!”

In unison Peter and Sharon say they originally thought of building their own home but thought it was too big a move so they started looking at lifestyle villages which they had heard about. They looked at all the over 50’s developments and one of the main considerations initially was to ensure it had no exit fees. “We are very social and we knew if we moved into a community it would make it easier to make new friends and contacts and feel involved.

We looked everywhere and Peter said we have to have a look at this place in Buderim. “I’m not living all the way up there” said Sharon but Peter insisted they have a look. They drove in and “she stopped whinging straight away “oh, maybe I’ll have a look” said Sharon. “Two hours later we signed a contract!” said Peter.

We were lucky enough when we were looking around to meet a couple of home owners who showed us through their home. As soon as we walked through and saw the garden, the rainforest and a patch of lawn we loved it. We didn’t feel confined, it offered a lot of privacy between the house and we just love the rainforest.

We went home, put the house on the market and it sold in 6 days! So we had to rent for a while and as soon as we could leave our jobs we did, had a party and drove up the next day.

When asked what they loved most about living at Natures Edge? “We love the fact we are so close to everything that we enjoy – Noosa, Coolum, the Botanic gardens, Mooloolaba, Caloundra.”
We love the climate, the lifestyle, the location, the people – we came for the location and the lifestyle but now we love the people and the social activities we have together. The people have become a big part of our life now.

Sharon said: “I love theatre and there is so much theatre on the coast and in Brisbane. We have started a theatre group at Natures Edge and recently went to Singing in the Rain in Brisbane with a group from here on the train – it’s so easy and quick.

“We are glad we are not working now as we are so busy we don’t have time to work. We both volunteer at the Sunshine Coast Visitors Information Centres at the Airport and Maroochydore. We volunteer about 6 hours a week and once a month we welcome the cruise passengers to the wharf and we love our life!”
